A Balrog is an ancient creature made of fire and shadow. During the Fellowships journey through the dwarven mines of Moria they encountered a dreaded Balrog. Gandalf engaged the ancient horror alone, as swords and bows were of no use, in order to buy the rest of the fellowship time to continue upon their quest.
