Jehanne la Pucelle (Joan the Maid), known now as Joan of Arc, was born to a peasant family in Domremy. As a young girl she began to see visions of the archangel Michael, Saint Margaret, and Saint Catherine directing her to lead the Dauphin Charles to his coronation and rid France of the English. Eventually she found herself at Charles' court and was tasked with lifting the siege at Orleans to prove her cause. She accomplished her mission within nine days of arrival in Orleans during which she led attacks on English positions. She never faltered even when struck with an arrow between the neck and shoulder. After the siege was lifted, she fought several battles, was wounded multiple times, and helped lead the Dauphin to Reims where he was crowned Charles VII of France. Through it all she never once injured or killed another person directly, preferring her banner to her sword. She was captured on May 23, 1430 at Compiegne, put on trial for heresy and burned at the stake. At the time of her death the English were still well established on the continent, which has prompted skepticism, both contemporary and modern, concerning her visions and whether her heavenly quest was truly fulfilled. But one thing is certain: there is no longer an English France.
