Equipped with his signature whistle, rattan cane, or a clubbed rope's end, the boatswain (or bosun) and his mates were responsible for driving the seamen to their duties - with violent encouragement if necessary. Drawn from the most experienced and burliest of sailors, a veteran boatswain could be the terror of both his own crew and the enemy in equal measure.
