While these creatures look almost identical to regular automatons, a skilful observer will note a large lump on their back, almost like they are wearing a close-fitting backpack. This lump is actually a plasma mine. When an automaton bomb reaches its target, it dives onto its face and detonates the mine, generally killing everything in the vicinity, including other automatons ("acceptable losses").
